Maynooth Parish Bible Study Group
Word of God as food for life
Lectio Divina is a way that helps us to read Scripture well and be nourished by it. We recognise that the Word of God is “a lamp for our steps and a light for our path” (Psalm 119).
When we are open to having our lives illuminated by the words of Scripture we find ourselves living more decisively and with greater joy.
Co-ordinators: Helen English
The Parish Bible Study group has been in existence for several years. When we gather together to read God’s Word, we understand it to be an expression of our search for God. The Bible is a book of faith and is best read in community and in communion with others. Our approach to studying the Bible is sometimes known as Lectio divina (sacred reading). It is a way that helps us to read Scripture well and be nourished by it.
We recognise that the Word of God is “a lamp for our steps and a light for our path (Ps 119). When we are open to having our lives illuminated by the words of Scripture we discover the Bible in our life experiences and we find our life experiences mirrored in the Bible. Having been nourished by God’s Word, we find ourselves living more decisively and with greater joy. Further information, contact Helen @ 01 628 5865 or Eilish @ 087 232 0508.
Background & History
The Maynooth Parish Bible Study Group first met in the summer of 2000. The Parish Priest at that time, Msgr. Alex Stenson, invited interested parishioners to gather together and under his guidance explored the weekday readings at Mass for the following week. The group met in the Parochial House over six Thursday nights in June to July of that year.
The course focused on the Old Testament prophets Amos and Jeremiah. The group continued to meet for several years, covering themes and characters in the Old Testament and exploring distinctive emphases in New Testament writings.
