Marriage

The Sacrament of Marriage is the celebration of the loving, life-long commitment of a man and a woman who pledge their love to each other for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, all the days of their lives.

Thinking about getting married?

Congratulations on your engagement. The Parish is here to help and support you as you prepare for your wedding day. There are both Church and State requirements that you will need to attend to so that in due course your marriage will be recognised by both Church and State. These are briefly outlined below along with additional information which we hope will be helpful to you.

Church requirements

  • You must both be at least 18 years of age in order to marry.
  • You must give a minimum of three months notice of your intention to marry.
  • Book your Church and arrange for a priest to officiate at your wedding ceremony.
  • Consider attending a Pre Marriage course. These courses are designed to help a couple reflect together on the meaning of marriage and the implications of living married life. See www.accorddublin.ie for information on courses in the Dublin area.
  • Meet with your local priest where you are currently living who will complete a Pre- Nuptial Enquiry form with you.
  • You will be asked to get Certificates of Baptism and Confirmation, which may be obtained from the Parish where these were celebrated.
  • You will need to establish that you are free to marry. The priest looking after your paperwork will advise on how best to do this depending on your particular circumstances.
  • You will need to choose Scripture readings, prayers, music etc. for your wedding ceremony. The priest who will officiate at your wedding ceremony will help you with preparing your wedding ceremony.
  • In Dublin, Church marriages are not permitted on Sundays, Holy Days, major feast days such as Easter and Christmas and during Holy Week.

Civil/State Requirements

  • You must both be at least 18 years of age in order to marry.
  • You both must give a minimum of three months notice of your intention to marry to the Registrar of Marriages in person. You will need to make an appointment with the Registrar to do this.
  • When you make an appointment to meet the Registrar you will be advised on the documentation you must bring with you and the information that you will have to provide to the Registrar.
  • The Registrar will issue you with a Marriage Registration Form (MRF). You will need to bring the MRF with you to the Church on your wedding day. You will sign this MRF at the end of your wedding ceremony and you must then return it within one month to the Registrar so that your marriage receives civil recognition.
